My initial interest with the world of dog training began with our GSD ‘Xena’ who came to us as a 12 week old pup. We attended the usual puppy classes and then began the long road of obedience work with a German Shepherd Club. The heel work and formal stuff went well and she responded and learnt quickly. However she began to show signs of wanting to dominate any other dog she came across in general day to day meetings and our struggle began. During this period, we took on ‘Zak’, a rescue case. He had been abandoned and was in a very sorry state when he arrived. Weighing barely a third of his ideal weight, and with broken dew claws and a matted coat, he looked a sorry case. He went straight to the vets and was operated on. He came home almost bald, both rear legs bandaged and a large scar from a long needed operation, a shadow of his current self. All he wanted to do was to push himself as tightly into a corner as possible and let the world pass him by. Having read ‘The Dog Listener’ by Jan Fennell and then seen her at work, I knew that her method of training and correcting problems would work for both our dogs and the quest began to study and understand our dogs. After achieving the Foundation Course and then the Advanced Certificate of Canine Communication, I now have dogs that are a pleasure to live with, and Zak is no longer the basket case he was. |
